Balpuri
The language of the city of Mirabalpur, used as an everyday language by
the Sorcerers of Mir. The Balpuri language has influenced much of the Midsea region. It is
closely related to and mutually intelligible with other Mirish dialects and the dialects
of northwest Orasaren. The word, Qaiyore, is of Balpuri derivation, and means "great
land". (In Balpuri, Qaiyore is "Qaiyora"). (Avaerandian scholars considered
Balpuri merely a dialect of Mirian, their name for the dialects of Mir and northwest
Orasaren).
The word Mir is actually of Avaeran origin - Mir is from "myr" which means mist,
as the Avaerans called Mir "Celamyr", isle of mist. Mirabalpur is a mixed word -
"a" is of/from and "pur" comes from "bar", the Avaeran word
for town/city. "Bal" is from the mirish word for a plain or flat land. So
Mirabalpur was "the plains city of the isle of mist".
Word order for the Insular languages is similar to that of RL romance languages - for example, when describing a noun, the adjective comes after it: e.g. ancient battle is "ruamoto opibra". When reading Balpuri imagine spanish, except that "j" and "z" are pronounced as in english.
The Balpuri words for iron, dungeon and city are derived from Avaeran, as are many of the month names highlighted in the Calendar.
