Environment & Maps

The lands of the upper valley which maintained the Therani Confederacy fall into one of three categories.

The cultivated lands of the Therani are fertile, used mostly for vegetable and cotton growth. These areas make up about half the land in Therani, generally under the sway of local Ther Ri who hold some power over the populace.

Almost 40% of Therani is wooded, mostly by forests of tamarisk, acacia, juniper and willows. Along the edges of swampland grow Alorean trees, originally used by the Therani to create bent furniture and wooden jewelry, has now turned into the prized material for the Therani Longbow. The woodlands are harvested for building materials as well, and timber trade with Taltherani is the heart of relations between the two nations.

The remaining 10% of Therani is swampland, located along the rivers. This area is eerily forested and completely uncultivatable save for the river-rice which is the staff of Therani cuisine. It is also the home of the Talner, medium-sized crocodilians which are hunted in winter for their hide and meat, and whose nests are occassionally raided for eggs by the Therani.

The City of Wyr was built at the confluence of the rivers Wyr and Tal, on a limestone outcropping which rose above the surrounding swampland. The most obvious aspect of this once-great city was the Tower, home to the Angels which protected Wyr from magic for centuries. Sadly, the invasion by unknown magicians in 1405 seems to have brought about the wrath of the Angels, who abandoned the city in its hour of need. The Shanari tribes have laid waste to the buildings and burned what they could before pulling back north to drier and more comfortable land.

The City of Hadrair was the next logical target for the Shanari, and also home to the newly crowned Dun Ri of the Therani Confederacy. Before being sacked, it was an important trade center, primarily with the Taltherani, whose most striking feature was the Subcity of Talanfar, formerly a little-used suburb but now the official center of trade. The Subcity grew from a series of ramshackle wooden buildings to a nearly opulent trade center. The pride of Talanfar was the now-demolished Mercantile House, a four-story limestone building with four tall spires, a domed roof, and deep blue shingles along the roofing. This was the official headquarters of Taltheran’s Merchant Guild in Hadrair.

The City of Unnirand is somewhat conservative, and remains the smallest of the three great Therani cities. Its homes are built more often of clay bricks or adobe, and rarely rise above one story. It is located far from the more western swamplands, surrounded instead by cultivated fields. Despite is small size, it is now surrounded by refugees and the Therani Army, preparing to strike back against the Shanari. The Shield of Therani is now permanently headquartered within this city, and members of this provisional army and their families are given secondary preferential treatment in the distribution of food (the Armies receive the greatest share, as they must be kept healthy and fit).
